Dictionary

Ad Impression
Each time a banner ad is displayed on a web page, it's counted as one ad or page impression. If a banner is displayed 50 times in 1 day, 50 impressions are delivered to site visitors.

Animation

Bandwidth

Banner
Also referred to as a banner ad, a banner is a typically rectangular advertisement placed on a Web site either above, below or on the sides of the Web site's main content and is linked to the advertiser's own Web site.


Broadband/High Speed
Generally referred to as an internet connection faster then 128 kbps. Dial-up at best is 56 kbps, so just over twice as fast as Dial-up and you are entering broadband territory.


Browser
Very often called Web browser, a software application used to locate and display Web pages. The two most popular browsers are Microsoft Internet Explorer and Netscape Navigator. There are many other browsers like AOL Browser, Opera, NeoPlanet and many others.


Button
Smaller than the traditional banner, buttons are usually located down the left or right side of a site.


Cable
Cable technologies use existing cable TV infrastructure (network) that your cable company uses for TV signals, to transmit data to and from the Internet. Since cable TV was designed as a broadcast system, the cable is shared amongst the users in your neighborhood and is considered high speed or broadband Internet access.


CGI
Common Gateway Interface. A programming language used within websites to automate tasks or add interactivity to a website. CGI can be any of many languages, such as Perl, PHP, ASP, C++, Python, VB, and many more (This site uses both Perl and PHP as CGI languages)


Click-Through
The number of visitors linking from a banner ad to the advertiser's website to sign up for something, make a purchase or retrieve more information.


Click-Through rate
Percentage of times users responded to an advertisment by clicking on the ad button/banner. At one time the standard in web-marketing measurements, click-through is based on the idea that online promotions that do what they're intended to do will elicit a click.


Competitive Research and Market Analysis
The process of researching the factors that make the competition and the rest of the market successful. This research and analysis is what's used to determine the success factors that must be fulfilled by a project directive.


Content Management
Sometimes called 'knowledge management'. Content management is often used to refer to the process of handling information presented in either a buy- or sell-side catalogs, including part numbers, descriptions and unit size. It also refers to the process of capturing, storing, sorting, codifying, integrating,updating and protecting any and all information.


Content Sponsorship
An area of content sponsored as a distinct entity often by a simgle advertier, as opposed to rotating banners with messages from several advertisers. Ofthen the content will reflect the nature of the sponsor; as well as the nature of the target demographic.


Cookies
Electronic ID tags sent from a Web server to a user's browser, where they remain until deleted by the user. Cookies can track web surfing patterns, such as ads clicked on, products purchased and sites visited, as well as to determine the user's origin.


Cost-per-action (CPA)
A payment model in which an advertiser pays based solely on qualifying actions by visitors such as sales or registrations.

Database
A special way of organizing computer data. It looks like a table implemented columns and rows for fast accessing data from any of the cells in the table. There are many different types of databases but all of them work on the same principle. Databases are very useful for storing and organizing data for later retrieval. Very often used for managing accounts, managing user information, creating guest books and bulletin boards, even this page (dictionary) is implemented with database.


DHCP
Short for Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol, a protocol for assigning dynamic IP addresses to devices on a network. With dynamic addressing, a device can have a different IP address every time it connects to the network. In some systems, the device's IP address can even change while it is still connected.


Dial-Up
Dial-up modems use the copper line from your home to the Central Office to transmit analog signals. Maximum speed is 56 kbps.


Discussion Group
A web page that supports interactive discussions by users. Users submit text content using a form, that is saved on the server and that way make it available to other visitors.


DNS
The Domain Name System which identifies each computer as a network point on the Internet using an internet protocol address systems to translate from domain name to IP and reverse.


Domain Name
A unique name that identifies one or more IP addresses. For example, the domain name www.TheBestMedia.com represents one IP address. Domain names are used in URLs to identify particular Web pages. Every web site that you visit is stored under domain name.


Domain Name Extension
Part after the dot in the domain name is a domain name extension. In the TheBestMedia.com domain, domain extension is .com . There are many other domain name extensions such as .ca .net .org .gov .edu .mil .info .web .us .uk .cc .it .mx .ba and many others.


Downloading
Downloading is the method by which users access and save or "pull down" software or other files to their own computers from a remote computer, usually via a modem.



DSL
Short for Digital Subscriber Line, DSL technologies use sophisticated modulation schemes to send data over the copper wire used for your phone connection and is considered high speed or broadband Internet access.


Dynamic Content
Information on web pages which changes or is changed automatically, e.g. based on database content or user information. Sometimes it's possible to spot that this technique is being used, e.g. if the URL ends with .asp, .cfm, .cgi or .shtml. It is possible to serve dynamic content using standard (normally static) .htm or .html type pages, though.


E-Commerce
E-Commerce means conducting business on the Internet. It is mostly referred to buying and selling items on line.


Encryption
A way of coding the information in a file or e-mail message so that if it is intercepted by a third party as it travels over a network it cannot be read. Only the persons sending and receiving the information have the key and this makes it unreadable to anyone except those persons (your browser does it automatically).


Firewall
A security barrier set up between a company's internal computer systems and outside systems. it keeps hostile visitors out to protect internal information. It can als be used to keep employees in to discourage game playing or visiting recreational sites. Firewalls don't usually affect access to commercial sites, except that some target consumers may only have access to pre-approved sites during work hours.


Flash
Browser independent vector and graphic animation technology owned by Macromedia Inc.. Most browsers support Flash technology and one flash animation looks the same on all browsers.


FTP
FTP stands for File Transfer Protocol which is one of the methods of transferring files over the Internet.


GIF
GIF stands for graphics interchange format, it is a bit-mapped graphics file format used by the World Wide Web. GIF supports colour and various resolutions. But it is limited to 256 colors.


Gigabit
(1) when used to describe data storage, 1,024 megabits (2) When used to describe data transfer rates, it refers to 10 to the 9th power (1,000,000,000) bits
Gigabyte
2 to the 30th power (1,073,741,824) bytes. One gigabyte is equal to 1,024 megabytes. Gigabyte is often shortened to GB


Hit
A single request from a Web browser for a single item from a web server.
Home Page
It is a first page (also called opening page) of a Web site.


Hosting
Hosting is a service provided by hosting company. That's a place (a computer available on the Internet) where web site is stored and made available to web site users to view the content of that web site.


HTML
Stands for HyperText Markup Language, the authoring and editing language used to create web pages on the World Wide Web.


Hyperlink
A word, phrase or graphic image in hypertext. It is the highlighted, underlined or "clickable" object that links to another site or page.


Internet
The largest global network connecting millions of computers. It is strictly based on TCP/IP protocol for communication between host and server.


Intranet
A private network belonging to an organization, usually a corporation, accessible only by the organization's members, employees, or others with authorization.


IP
Short for Internet Protocol


IP Address
An IP (Internet Protocol) address is a unique identifier for a point or host connection on an IP network. An IP address is a 32 bit binary number usually represented as 4 decimal values, each representing 8 bits, in the range 0 to 255 (known as octets) separated by decimal points. It is just a number like 66.46.105.9


IP Assignment
IP assignment is how your computer gets an IP address from your Internet Service Provider, DHCP, Static IP, or PPPoE are generally used.


ISDN
Short for Integrated Services Digital Network, an international communications standard for sending voice, video, and data over digital telephone lines or normal telephone wires. Each channel is 64 kbps


ISP
Short for Internet Service Provider, a company that provides access to the Internet


Java applet
A short program written in Java (not JavaScript) that is attached to a World Wide Web page and executed by the browser machine. Often used for complicated web applications.


JavaScript
JavaScript is a client-side scripting language that allows dynamic behavior to be specified within HTML documents. Most browsers support java however some browsers are disabled for JavaScript use.


JPEG (JPG)
Stands for Joint Photographic Experts Group. JPEG uses compression technique for color images and therefore some details are lost in the compression yet giving relatively good quality. It is widely used on the Internet and other digital applications.
Keyword Determination and Optimization
The Process of determining which key words are most relevant to a particular website's service or product. The Optimization process is implemented onto web pages and it's contents so that the search engine will find and rank the pages highly according to those key words.


Kilobit (Kb)
1,024 bits for technical purposes, transfer rates are measured in kilobits per second, abbreviated as Kbps, and count a kilo as 1,000 bits.
Kilobyte (KB)
kilobyte is 1,024 bytes, but it is often used loosely as a synonym for 1,000 bytes. Data transfer rates are measured in kilobytes per second, abbreviated as KBps, and count a kilo as 1,000 bytes.


Link
Sometimes called hyperlink. A link is object on the web page. When visitor of a web site click with the mouse on that object then user is taken to another web page where the link is pointing to. Different types of links are: text links, graphic links, java links, form links and some other which are not very important.

Megabit (Mb)

PHP
PHP Hypertext Preprocessor is a server-side, HTML embedded scripting language used to create dynamic Web pages. Designed for Windows and Unix type platforms.


Pixel
Pixel is the unit of measurement for online advertising. It's a combination of picture and element and is the smallest element of a display that can be assigned a color. If the computer display is set to maximum resolution, it's the smallest building block on the monitor. If the display is set to lower resoution, it can be made up of several blocks to form each pixel.


Point to Point (P2P)
We use this term for any connection that is from one point to another, such as a T1, DS3, and OC3 etc. These are typically used for business connections and are generally more expensive then residential services.
